Academic twittering - journal club via social media (#38)
Twitter is a web 2.0 social media platform. Content is entirely produced by users and in the form of public forum messages limited to a total of 140 characters. Hashtags provide a mechanism to file or categorise tweets and enable users to easily follow a discussion but are dependent upon posters including the designated hashtag within every relevant tweet. Twitter is emerging as a powerful tool for medical education.
The International Urology Journal Club on Twitter commenced in November 2012 and discussion tweets are made to the designated hashtag #urojc. It is administered by the account @iurojc which currently has well over 400 followers. The #urojc discussion commences on the first Sunday or Monday of each month depending upon the international time zone and a designated uro-oncology paper discussed. Discussion continues in an asynchronous manner over 48 hours. Study authors are invited to participate and a Best Tweet prize awarded for each month. Twitter metrics through Symplur demonstrate continued high user engagement and is a regular interaction, confirming the sustainability of this model.
