Aim

To investigate the role of combined sono and photo-dynamic therapy (SPDT) in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Method

This phase 1 ethics approved trial (00250- NEAF code Au/1/ D3F806) has been established to assess the potential role of combined SPDT across a range of prostate cancer patients, including focal disease and those patients with persisting local cancer after radical treatments.

Advanced photo-chemical agents have been used in this trial with activation by specific sound, laser and light emitting diode (LED) light equipment.

ResultsĀ

The safety, dosage and side effects of the sensitizers as well as the spectral range of the two energy modalities used, together with the interim results will be presented.

Conclusion

Sono and photodynamic therapy has been shown to be safe and may prove to have a role in the future treatment of prostate cancer patients.
